พลาสติกมีหลายชนิด โดยแต่ละชนิดจะมีคุณสมบัติและการนำไปใช้งานที่แตกต่างกันไป ส่วนใหญ่แล้วพลาสติกจะถูกจัดหมวดหมู่ตามวิธีการผลิต โดยแบ่งออกเป็น 2 กลุ่ม คือ
พลาสติกเชิงทําลายตัว (Thermoplastics) ซึ่งเป็นพลาสติกที่สามารถระบายความร้อนและตัวทําลายตัวได้โดยไม่เปลี่ยนแปลงสมบัติดังเดิม เช่น โพลีเอทิลีน (Polyethylene), โพลีไพร์ (Polypropylene), พอลีคาร์บอเนต (Polycarbonate), แอคริลิก (Acrylic), พอลีเมทาล์ (Polymethyl Methacrylate) เป็นต้น
พลาสติกเชิงสังเคราะห์ (Thermosets) ซึ่งเป็นพลาสติกที่ไม่สามารถระบายความร้อนและตัวทําลายตัวได้ หลังจากที่ผ่านการผลิตแล้ว เช่น เรซิ่น (Resin), อีพ็อกซี่ (Epoxy), ฟิบเกอร์กลาส (Fiberglass), และคอมพอสิต์ (Composites) เป็นต้น
There are many kinds of plastics, each with different characteristics and uses. According to the production methods, plastics are divided into two categories:
Thermoplastic, a plastic that can be cooled and decomposed without changing its original properties, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polycarbonate, acrylate, polymethacrylate, etc.
Thermosetting plastic, a kind of plastic that is not easy to cool, has been produced, such as Resin, Epoxy, Fiberglass and composite materials.
